The beating heart of Chefchaouen: cafés under the plane trees, the Grand Mosque and the 15th-century Kasbah with its Andalusian garden, small ethnographic museum and a tower overlooking the medina.
Get lost in the indigo-blue alleys, the most photographed in Morocco. The souks are full of local crafts: woven wool blankets from the Rif, leather, pottery, soap and mountain goat cheese.
At the eastern gate of the medina, the Ras El Ma spring has supplied the town for centuries. Women still wash wool here; it is also the trailhead for paths to the Spanish Mosque and the mountains.
